Butterfly Necklace by Groxx Butterfly Necklace by Groxx
Yay :w00t: ! It's finished :) Definately my favorite thing to come out of Art Metals/Jewelery class (for good reason). Did it in my spare time, took about two weeks, so 15-20 hours.

So, what I did was bought a cheap serpentine chain, cut it in half ( :O ) and soldered the ends on where you see em. The chain isn't very long, but it's almost perfect for most girls ;) So, a bit small on most guys. I should probably measure it or something.

Oh, if you can't see for some reason, that's a quarter for scale :) I'm SO glad I decided to attempt the smaller size, instead of going for one 2 inches wide. It looks a lot better.

Almost all of my jewelry work involves piercing so I understand the work you put into this piece:) Very nicely done!

agreed, it IS beautiful!
Have made others by now? If you do more, you should make a ring for the top to link the chain to.

wow, that's pretty! I have no idea how you made it all symmetrical like that. I can't even draw symmetrically.

It wasn't too hard to do (once I found a design to work from), just took time.

oh, guess I didn't say up there... it's silver. Not sterling :fork: , though I may end up doing another one (or two or three... I know at least 5 people at my school who would buy one).

I love the intricate work, and it seriously is the best butterfly I've ever seen! The details are amazing and must've been a pain in the butt. If you ever sell this one/make another, I'd love to have it!

A quick question... how did you get the piercing holes so small for the start on your saw blade? I've been having difficulty in that respect.

THAT was hard. I went out and bought a really-freakin-tiny drill bit (60-guage. It's only a little bigger than a blade), busted it THREE times while drilling, bought another, and only broke that one twice :D I promptly went out and bought two more, for later projects ;)

If you're interested, I got it at Ace Hardware, it's the smallest drill bit they carried. And I'd suggest snapping it in half to start, so it doesn't bend as much when you start drilling (those suckers are REALLY flexible and break easily). They're about 2 bucks.

I've actually got a ring that's got a MUCH smaller hole (heart-shape) than any up there, that I made by notching the ends and soldering it together. I'll stick up a picture of it, if I can ever get it away from my art teacher :giggle:

I see. Thanks. I could only get about a 32 gague bit from the local Lowe's. I couldn't find anything smaller, which was incredibly annoying. But I'll keep that in mind. Hmm... do we even have an Ace Hardware store in Albuquerque? *Thinks...*

Keep it up. Looks good so far.

I thought it was bigger, somehow, but that makes it all the more impressive that you managed to get so much detail into such a small piece. :omg:

wow. i'm doing a jewellery design course myself and can tell you put a lot of effort into the tiny details. much much sawing. break many blades?? well done!! well worth all the effort, the result is stunning.

:icongroxx:

Nah, I think I broke two on the whole thing.

Want to know the tricks to making em last longer? Make SURE it's really tightly held, so it makes a nice high "ping" when you pluck it. It should be only slightly shy of actually breaking the blade. Literally. That, and when it gets stuck, twitch the blade up and down, DON'T just yank. The twitching will dislodge it, and usually losen up wherever you're cutting. Sawing took me a total of about 3 hours.

I use two tricks: let the blade do the cutting - never push & use a bit of wax on the blade - rewaxing for long cuts. Great butterfly by the way!
